The Spiritual Practice of Yoga

This Discourse is about the practical, down-to-earth advice on mastering the mind and achieving physical, mental, and emotional harmony in life through applying the ancient, yet timeless techniques of Raga Yoga from Sri Swami Satchidananda. The roots of this practice come from Sri Patanjali’s, Kriya Yoga Sutras. Patanjali refers to certain practical hints to be followed in our daily lives to prepare us for the more subtle practices to follow. In the Samadhi Pada, Patanjali gives us the aim of Yoga in a theoretical way, explaining it as the control of the Città vrtti (memory waves, meaning mind clutter), or thought forms. There are different kinds of thought forms and practices to control them, and the different kinds of superconscious experience culminating in the highest experience of nirbiya samadhi, (the highest state of samadhi, or spiritual bliss and Self Realization, in yoga.)  To be in nirbija samadhi is to experience absolute liberation from the attachments and thoughts of the mind. He tells students to prepare himself or herself by laying the proper foundation, then gradually build until that level is reached. For this Patanjali gives a number of simple directions. In this class we will take a brief look at what they are.
